Historical Periodicals
While most articles in these historical periodicals are fundamentally sound and contain the truth of Jesus
Christ, those articles which rely on any other sources besides the Inspired Version of the Bible, the Book of
Mormon or the Doctrine and Covenants are less reliable and should be read very prayerfully by the reader to
determine the truthfulness of the message contained therein.

Autumn Leaves was published from 1888 until 1925 when the name was changed to Vision.
The publication continued until 1932. The original editor was Marietta Walker and the
publication was geared toward young people.
The Saints' Advocate containes 8 volumes. The original editors were W. W. Blair and Zenos
H. Gurley, Sr.
The Saints' Herald started publication in 1860 and still continues today (currently called
"Herald"). This was the main publication of the Reorganized Church.
Volume 1 was the only volume printed and it contains just numbers 1 through 4. The
first two volumes were published at Kirtland, OH while the last two were publised at
Far West. Edited by Joseph Smith, Jr. and published by Thomas B. Marsh.
6 volumes were published at Nauvoo, IL. The original editors were Ebenezer Robinson
and Don C. Smith. Future editors included Joseph Smith, Jr. and John Taylor.
The Millennial Star began publication in 1840 in England and contined being published
for many years as a LDS publication. Here is provided the first 6 volumes only.
This publication was edited and published by Isaac Sheen in Covington, KY. Only one
volume was printed with only 9 numbers. Isaac Sheen later used his press to publish
the Saints Herald.
The Messenger was published by Apostle Jason W. Briggs in Salt Lake City, UT. Three
volumes were published before the publication was discontinued.
Conference minutes document the business of the Church throughout the years.
Zion's Ensign was a weekly newspaper published in Independence, Missouri. The paper
was originally edited by J. A. Robinson and Frederick G. Pitt.
The Evening and Morning Star was the first publication of the Church. It was published
originally in Independence, MO by W. W. Phelps until volume 2 number 14. Subsequent
numbers were published in Kirtland, OH. There were two volumes with 24 numbers.
Three volumes were published at Kirtland, OH. The original editor was Oliver Cowdery
and it was published by F. G. Williams.
January 1908 to October 1925
The Journal of History was edited by Church Historian Heman C. Smith for volumes 1
through 12. Additional volumes were edited by Walter Wayne Smith and Samuel A.
Burgess. There were 18 volumes with 4 publications per year.
January 1913 to 1972
Stepping Stones was a children's Church periodical.
January to June, 1841
The Gospel Reflector was edited by Benjamin Winchester, Presiding Elder at the
Philadelphia Branch of the Church.
June 7, 1844
The Nauvoo Expositor was a newspaper published by disaffected Church member
William Law and others. Only one number was published before the press was
destroyed after being declared a public nuisance.
July 1844 to June 1845
The Ensign was a periodical published by George M. Hinkle and William E. McLellin at
Buffalo, Scott County, Iowa Territory. It was published monthly for the first year.
January 1846 to June 1850
The Vorhee Herald was published by James J. Strang in Voree (near Burlington)
Wisconsin Territory. The publication changed its name to Zion's Reveille and then to the
Gospel Herald.
NOTE: Many of the publications during the years from 1844 to 1859 contain questionable doctrinal principles. These
publications are presented for their historical nature and also due to the association in those groups of many future
members of the Church. They also contain valuable family history information (marriages, deaths, etc).
January 1849 to May 1855
Zion's Harbinger and Baneemy's Organ was published in St. Louis, Missouri by Charles
B. Thompson, the self-proclaimed "Baneemy". Charles B. Thompson's group was a
splinter group from the Church.
July 1869 to
Zion's Hope was published at Plano, Illinois with Joseph Smith, III as editor.
January 1885 to November 1888
The Expositor was published by Hiram P. Brown in Oakland, California.
